Microsoft runs six cloud regions in India: four it owns — Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad — and two operated with Reliance Jio, Jio India West and Jio India Central. It claims the largest hyperscale cloud presence of any provider in the country, on a US$20.5 billion commitment. The striking thing about this record is that across the whole national footprint, the only published capacity figure Gridvik can find is 7.5 MW of IT load per Jio data centre, from a 2019 announcement.

Gridvik read — six regions is a resilience story, not a capacity story

Each owned region typically runs three availability zones with independent power, cooling and networking. That means Microsoft's Indian build is replicated infrastructure: the same workload capacity exists several times over, by design, so that any one zone or region can fail.

This is why region counts inflate faster than megawatts. Adding a fourth region does not add a quarter of the capacity of the other three — it adds a redundant copy, sized to what customers need to survive a regional failure. Regions and MW move on different curves, and reporting that treats them as the same thing is how capacity totals go wrong.

The five-year-old Jio figure is the only place in this record where an actual IT load number survives.

3The capacity problem

Microsoft has built or partnered on six Indian cloud regions and disclosed the capacity of exactly one, in 2019, before any of them opened.

What Microsoft publishes
Region names, availability-zone counts, feature availability, launch dates, investment totals in dollars, renewable procurement in MW
What Microsoft does not publish
Capacity in MW for any region · square footage for any region except as a stadium simile · building counts · substation ratings · PUE for most facilities
The only published capacity
In 2019 Jio said the first two data centres would "house IT equipment consuming up to 7.5 MW of power" — 15 MW of IT load across Gujarat and Maharashtra combined
What third parties estimate
One market-intelligence publisher states Microsoft expanded its Hyderabad region by 50 MW in January 2026, lifting regional IT load to 150 MW. Gridvik records this as an unverified third-party estimate
Why this is commercially significant
Every vendor sizing the Microsoft account in India is working from inference. That is precisely the gap a subscription product should be selling into — not guesses dressed as facts, but a documented view of what is knowable and what is not
What we will not do
Gridvik will not convert dollars into megawatts. A US$20.5 bn commitment spanning cloud, AI, skilling and operations does not yield a defensible capacity figure, and any publication that offers one is guessing

4The Jio partnership — the model that explains the network

Structure
A 10-year partnership, announced in 2019: Reliance Jio builds data centres across India and Microsoft deploys its Azure platform in them to support Jio's offerings
Initial two sites
One in Gujarat and one in Maharashtra, described at the time as capable of housing IT equipment consuming up to 7.5 MW each, targeted to be fully operational in calendar year 2020
Today
Two operational regions: Jio India West and Jio India Central
What Microsoft gets
Regional footprint and Indian-market reach without owning the physical asset — the same asset-light logic it uses elsewhere for sovereign and regulated workloads
What Jio gets
Azure platform services and a global hyperscaler's credibility on top of its own data-centre build
Why it matters to a vendor
This is the single most important commercial insight in the record. At a Jio-operated region, the equipment buyer is Jio, not Microsoft — but the specification is Microsoft's. A vendor who pitches Microsoft for capacity inside Jio India West is pitching the wrong balance sheet. Two buying centres, one brand
Related
Microsoft also has an announced partnership with AdaniConneX covering Hyderabad and Pune campuses. If Microsoft capacity is partly leased rather than self-built, the Indian-network record understates how many different buying centres sit behind the Microsoft brand

Figure 1Live colocation capacity by city, H1 2026, with each city's forward pipeline. Microsoft operates an owned region in all four. This shows the size of the markets, not Microsoft's share of them — which nobody has published.
Careful with this chart

These are market totals across all operators, published by Cushman & Wakefield for H1 2026. Microsoft is one customer of one part of each market and its share is not disclosed. The chart is here so you can see the relative weight of the cities Microsoft has chosen — Mumbai at roughly half the national total, then Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.

Do not read Microsoft's presence into these numbers. A hyperscaler's self-built region may not appear in colocation totals at all, since colocation data counts third-party leasable capacity.

6Timeline

  • Microsoft and Reliance Jio announce a 10-year partnership. Jio will build data centres; Microsoft will deploy Azure in them. The first two, in Gujarat and Maharashtra, are described as housing up to 7.5 MW of IT equipment each, operational by 2020.
  • Microsoft's India cloud regions come into service, including Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai) and West India (Mumbai). AWS also launches its Hyderabad region the same year.
  • Microsoft commits US$3 billion to India for cloud and AI infrastructure.
  • Microsoft announces US$17.5 billion over 2026–2029, its largest investment in Asia, and confirms the Hyderabad region will go live mid-2026 as its largest in India.
  • India South Central goes live in Hyderabad — the fourth owned region and sixth Indian region overall.
  • Hyderabad designated a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South; 630 MW of more than 1,000 MW of contracted Indian renewables confirmed as flowing.
  • Remaining funds to be deployed. Microsoft projects India's total data-centre capacity growing from about 2 GW today to 12–14 GW by 2035

7Procurement

Read this before the table

There is no single procurement here. There are at least two buying centres — Microsoft and Jio — plus possible third-party lessors such as AdaniConneX. The account is large; the route in is narrow. Everything below is a Gridvik estimate.

Procurement window and scope
Gridvik assessment · 22 Oct 2026
Order window
Expansion, 2026–2029. All six regions are live, so base builds are placed. Microsoft has said it will continue expanding its India regions, and the US$17.5 bn runs through 2029 — but no expansion capacity or schedule has been published.
Procurement heat
High value, low accessibility. The largest hyperscale footprint in India, procured through global frameworks. For an Indian vendor the realistic entry is as a sub-supplier, an installation partner, or a local-content provider rather than as a direct awardee.
Who buys
Two buying centres: Microsoft for the four owned regions, and Jio for the two partner regions — even though the specification in the Jio sites is Microsoft's Azure platform. Any account plan that treats 'Microsoft India' as one buyer will miss half the spend and may miss the easier half
DG / gensets (indicative)
Not estimable from public data. There is no defensible capacity figure for this network, therefore no defensible genset count. Any number offered to you is invented — including, if you see one in a competitor's report, theirs
UPS (indicative)
Three availability zones per owned region implies full replication of power and cooling trains, so installed UPS capacity per unit of customer workload is roughly triple a single-site build
Cooling (indicative)
Newer Microsoft capacity follows the zero-water, air-cooled chiller design used at India South Central. Older regions built in 2022 may use conventional evaporative plant — a generational split worth asking about before quoting
Categories in scope
Air-cooled chillers · CRAH and fan walls · DG and gensets · UPS · HV/MV switchgear · PDUs and busway · racking and containment · structured cabling and fibre · fire and suppression · BMS/DCIM · liquid cooling for new AI capacity · renewable PPAs and storage

8Assumptions and method

What is sourced
Region names and count, ownership structure, live dates, the Jio partnership and its 7.5 MW figure, investment tranches, renewable procurement, customer designations
What is derived
Only the procurement section and the observation about replication economics
Capacity
None recorded for Microsoft. The 15 MW across two Jio sites remains the only published hard figure, and it dates from 2019. The 150 MW Hyderabad estimate is quoted as third-party and not adopted
Additivity rule
Not applicable. This is a portfolio programme across six regions, three of which may sit inside facilities owned by other operators. It is never summed with PRJ-015 or with any Indian facility record
Market data
City-level capacity is Cushman & Wakefield's H1 2026 India data-centre update, covering colocation supply across all operators. It is context, not a Microsoft figure
Relationship to PRJ-015
PRJ-015 records the Hyderabad region in detail. This record is the national frame. The two overlap almost entirely and must not be added

9Limits and open questions

Capacity
The central gap. Six regions, one 2019 figure of 7.5 MW per Jio site
Building counts
Unknown for every region
Ownership of the shell
Whether Microsoft's owned regions sit on Microsoft-built campuses or in leased Indian facilities is not disclosed. The AdaniConneX partnership for Hyderabad and Pune suggests at least some is leased
Jio region capacity
The 7.5 MW figure is from 2019 and pre-dates the actual build. Current capacity in each Jio region is unknown
Investment attribution
No share of the US$20.5 bn is allocated to any region or to data-centre capex specifically
Expansion plans
Stated in general terms only. No site, capacity or date
What we will not claim
No capacity, no equipment budget, no tenancy, and no view on whether the largest-footprint claim is true in MW terms
