L&T is the largest engineering contractor in India and it is now an operator. Its data centre business, renamed Larsen & Toubro Vyoma, has a campus at Kancheepuram that has been published at 90 MW, then 30 MW, then 24 MW, then 18 MW, then 12 MW — and separately described as a 250 MW Phase 1 on 150 MVA of live power. In August 2026 it took a ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 crore order from the American AI cloud company Together AI to host 10,000 Nvidia B300 GPUs. Five weeks earlier, the Tamil Nadu government announced a ₹15,000 crore data centre expansion by L&T at the same campus. Both were reported as news. They are almost certainly one number.

1At a glance

Business
Larsen & Toubro Vyoma, the group's data centre and digital infrastructure arm. It absorbed L&T's data centre and cloud services business in August 2026 for ₹1,400 crore. Vyoma.AI is the AI infrastructure brand; LTN Compute is the contracting subsidiary
Location
Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, on the southwestern edge of the Chennai market
Commissioned
12 MW. Testing was under way in late 2024 and the capacity was reported commissioned by May 2026
In commissioning
A further 6 MW described as at an advanced stage in May 2026
Claimed available
30 MW — a figure that does not follow from 12 plus 6
Original plan
A November 2021 memorandum with Tamil Nadu for a data centre of up to 90 MW, built in phases over five years
Current plan
Phase 1 of the Chennai campus designed for 250 MW, with 150 MVA of power infrastructure ready
Anchor customer
Together AI, for 10,000 Nvidia B300 GPUs in a single cluster. Order classified by L&T as a mega order, meaning ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 crore. The exact value was not disclosed
Cost of the first 12 MW
About ₹2,000 crore, or roughly ₹167 crore per MW
Additivity
Not additive as a programme. Individual commissioned capacity is counted separately

Figure 1Every figure is published. Only the bottom bar describes capacity that has been energised. The 150 MVA is a power connection, not a data centre, and is shown for comparison because it is the real constraint on the site.

The one to use

18 MW. That is the only figure on this page that describes equipment which has been installed. Everything else is a design, a target, a connection size or an unreconciled claim.

The 250 MW Phase 1 deserves particular scepticism. One hundred and fifty megavolt-amperes is the power that exists at this site. A 250 MW data centre cannot run on 150 MVA, so the Phase 1 figure is conditional on a grid upgrade that has not been announced.

3The 12 plus 6 does not equal 30

In May 2026 the company reported that its data centre business had commissioned 12 MW at Kanchipuram, that a further 6 MW was at an advanced stage of commissioning, and that this brought total capacity available to 30 MW. Twelve plus six is eighteen.

Three explanations are consistent with the public record and Gridvik cannot choose between them:

What the missing 12 MW could be
ExplanationFits the evidence?Consequence
The claim was rounded up or a target was reported as deliveredCommon in this sector18 MW is the built figure
Another site's capacity was included in a platform totalPlausible; the group has other facilitiesThe 30 MW is a group number, not a campus number
Further capacity was energised between the reporting and the claimPossible, but no announcement supports itWould need a source, and none exists

Gridvik uses 18 MW and states the conflict rather than resolving it. A vendor planning against 30 MW at this site should confirm energisation directly.

4Two ₹15,000 crore stories

This is the most consequential thing on the page, and it is a reporting observation rather than an accusation. Two announcements, five weeks apart, both carrying the number ₹15,000 crore, both about the same campus.

The two announcements
4 June 202613 August 2026
What was announcedA Tamil Nadu government memorandum with L&T covering three projects worth ₹18,600 croreA mega order won by LTN Compute from Together AI
Data centre element₹15,000 crore for a hyperscale and edge AI data centre expansion in Kancheepuram district₹10,000 to ₹15,000 crore, L&T's mega-order classification. Reuters reported up to ₹15,000 crore

Rest of the package₹2,500 crore electronics in Coimbatore, ₹1,100 crore offshore wind at KattupalliNot applicable

It is unlikely to be a coincidence. The most economical reading is that the Together AI order is the anchor contract that funds the ₹15,000 crore expansion the state announced in June, and that the two were reported as separate pieces of news because they were announced by different parties in different cities.

Why this matters commercially: if both numbers are real and they are the same money, the Indian AI infrastructure order book is being overcounted by ₹15,000 crore (about $1.7 billion) in most summaries of it. If they are genuinely two separate commitments, that is a materially larger and much more interesting fact. No public document reconciles them, and Gridvik will not assert which it is.

What is not in doubt

The order itself is real and disclosed to the exchanges: 10,000 Nvidia B300 GPUs, a single integrated cluster, for Together AI, at Vyoma's Chennai campus, described as the largest single-cluster AI deployment in India.

It also makes L&T the only Indian engineering contractor that builds data centres for others and now operates one, with a named international anchor tenant.

5What 10,000 B300 GPUs need

This can be checked arithmetically, and it validates the reported numbers in a way that most capacity claims in this market cannot.

Deriving the footprint of the Together AI cluster
StepFigureNote
GPUs10,000Nvidia B300, Blackwell Ultra
Eight-GPU systems1,250Standard DGX B300 configuration

Published capacity of the AI factoryabout 23 MWReported in trade coverage
Implied networking and storage overheadabout 27%Comfortable and consistent
Colocation capacity retained on siteabout 6 MWReported
Total campus capacity accounted forabout 29 MWAgainst the 30 MW claimed

The arithmetic closes. 23 MW of AI factory plus 6 MW of colocation is 29 MW, which is the 30 MW L&T claims, and 10,000 B300s at DGX densities need about 18 MW of IT load, which leaves about a quarter for networking and storage. Every number here is internally consistent, and that is unusual enough in this market to be worth saying out loud.

It also explains the "12 plus 6 equals 30" puzzle. The 30 MW is a campus capacity figure covering both the AI conversion and the residual colocation, not the sum of two commissioned phases.

6The contractor becomes the operator

L&T builds data centres. It has been the engineering, procurement and construction contractor on hyperscale projects for years. In 2026 it turned the same capability inward, and did it in three moves inside eight months.

The sequence
DateMoveSignificance
May 2026Data centre business rebranded Larsen & Toubro Vyoma; 12 MW commissioned at KanchipuramThe platform is named and capitalised
4 June 2026₹18,600 crore Tamil Nadu memorandum including a ₹15,000 crore data centre expansionThe state commits land and power; L&T commits scope
August 2026L&T's data centre and cloud services business transferred to Vyoma.AI for ₹1,400 croreA listed contractor puts the business into a separate vehicle
13 August 2026Mega order from Together AI for 10,000 B300 GPUs at the Chennai campusA named international anchor tenant, and the order book to justify the expansion
Q4 FY27 targetNo date published for the AI factory going live; trade coverage suggests November 2026The cliff edge for everything above

The incentive to watch is competitive as well as commercial. L&T is a contractor to operators including some of the companies in this registry. Every move it makes as an operator is a move its clients will notice — and its pricing as a contractor now competes with its own hosting business.

Why this is the most credible AI announcement in the batch

Unlike most projects here, the anchor tenant is named, the counterparty is a known US company, the GPU model is specified, the power is quantified as MVA, and the arithmetic closes.

It is still an order and a design. Nothing is live. But this is what a verifiable announcement looks like, and it should be the standard applied to everything else.

7Cost per megawatt does not fit

One number on this page does not agree with the rest of the market, and it is worth flagging because it changes equipment budgets.

Cost per megawatt of built capacity, three Indian operators
ProjectCostCapacityPer MW
Yotta D1, Greater Noida₹1,500 crore28.8 MWabout ₹52 crore
CtrlS Chennai park₹4,000 crore72 MWabout ₹56 crore
L&T Sriperumbudurabout ₹2,000 crore12 MWabout ₹167 crore

Two explanations fit. Either the ₹2,000 crore figure covers more than the first 12 MW — a campus, land, a substation sized for far more, or later phases bundled into one number — or L&T built a genuinely more expensive specification, which is plausible for an AI-ready campus with high floor loading.

Gridvik records the discrepancy rather than picking one. The practical consequence is real either way: anyone using ₹167 crore per MW as a benchmark for Indian build costs will over-budget by a factor of three.

8Timeline

  • L&T signs a memorandum with the Tamil Nadu government to build a data centre at Kanchipuram, described as up to 90 MW in phases over five years.

9Procurement

Procurement window and scope
Gridvik assessment · 22 Oct 2026
This record
A live campus converting most of its capacity from colocation to AI hosting, with a named international anchor tenant
The live fit-out
About 23 MW of AI factory: liquid cooling for DGX-class systems, high-density busway, 800 gigabit class interconnect, parallel storage
Already committed
10,000 Nvidia B300 GPUs and their systems. The compute is contracted; the facility plant around it is the open question
The next step
Energising beyond 150 MVA. A 250 MW Phase 1 requires a grid upgrade that has not been announced
Who buys
Vyoma.AI and LTN Compute jointly — one holds the campus, the other holds the contract. Both are new entities, which means there is no historic vendor list to displace
Structural advantage for sellers
L&T is itself a major EPC buyer of electrical and mechanical plant. Its data centre arm buys the same categories
Order window
Fit-out through 2027. The AI factory is targeted before the end of the financial year
Procurement heat
High. Named tenant, contracted compute, disclosed power constraint, no legacy vendor lock-in
All estimates are labelled as estimates. No tender dates claimed, no private contact data published.

10Assumptions and method

What is sourced
The 2021 memorandum and its 90 MW target, the ₹2,000 crore cost, the 12 MW and 6 MW commissioning status, the 30 MW claim, the ₹18,600 crore state memorandum and its component values, the Vyoma.AI transfer value, the 250 MW Phase 1 and 150 MVA, the Together AI order and its classification, the 10,000 B300 count and the DGX system power
What is derived
The 18 MW built figure, the 18.1 MW IT load implied by 10,000 B300s, the 27% networking overhead, the 29 MW campus reconciliation, and all cost-per-megawatt figures
Capacity figure used
18 MW as commissioned or in commissioning. Contributes to Gridvik’s live and building buckets as separate components, not as a 30 MW block
Additivity rule
Not additive as a programme. The 90 MW target, the 250 MW design and the 30 MW claim are ceilings and are never added to any total
The two ₹15,000 crore figures
Reported side by side. Gridvik does not assert they are the same money, and does not net them off
Currency
₹88.40 to the US dollar, fixed quarterly

11Limits and open questions

The central gap
No official energised capacity figure. The 18 MW is derived from two separate statements about commissioning
The 30 MW claim
Unexplained. Twelve plus six does not equal thirty and no source reconciles it
Grid headroom
150 MVA is live. A 250 MW Phase 1 needs roughly 260 MVA. The upgrade is unannounced
AI factory go-live
Trade coverage suggests November 2026. No company date has been published. "Before the end of the financial year" is the only stated horizon
Order value
L&T did not disclose it. The ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 crore figure is the band for its "mega order" classification, not a confirmed value
Relationship to the state memorandum
Not disclosed by any party
Cost per MW
About ₹167 crore, three times the market. Unexplained
What we will not claim
No confirmed order value, no AI factory go-live date, no assertion that the two ₹15,000 crore figures are the same money, and no equipment brands
