STT GDC Kolkata 1 is 3 MW — the smallest metro presence the company has anywhere in India, and 33% of its 9 MW Kolkata portfolio. Its sibling, Kolkata 2, is 6 MW, so the pair splits cleanly two to one. Three megawatts is also 2.8 times the only data centre capacity this registry counts in the whole of West Bengal, which says more about the state’s counting than about this building. No stage, rack count, floor area or PUE is published.

2The smallest metro building
Across nine STT cities, this is the smallest building in a metro. That is a statement about where the company puts capital.
| City | Smallest building | Largest building | Portfolio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kolkata | 3 MW | 6 MW | 9 MW |
| Delhi | 0.9 MW | 10 MW | 12 MW |
| Ahmedabad | 4 MW | 4 MW | 4 MW |
| Hyderabad | 4 MW | 4 MW | 6 MW |
| Bengaluru | 0.6 MW | 18 MW | 23 MW |
| Pune | 9 MW | 24 MW | 40 to 81 MW |
| Noida | 17 MW | 28 MW | 63 MW |
| Chennai | 3 MW | 26 MW | 68 MW |
| Mumbai | 1 MW | 49 MW | 133 MW |
Only Ahmedabad and Hyderabad run smaller portfolios, and both are single-building cities — one 4 MW module each. Kolkata is the smallest two-building metro, which makes it the smallest market in which STT has chosen to operate more than one site.
That is a foothold rather than a position. Three megawatts in the cheapest metro in India is what an operator builds when it wants a presence but does not yet believe the demand.
3What 3 MW is for
Three megawatts serves one customer, or a handful of small ones, and it is the size at which a data centre stops being infrastructure and becomes a relationship.
| Assumed density | Cabinets | What it serves |
|---|---|---|
| 5 kW a rack | 600 | an enterprise colocation floor |
| 8 kW a rack | 375 | a mid-market hall |
| 12 kW a rack | 250 | a single accelerated-compute cluster |
Kolkata’s data centre demand is banking, financial services, a large state public sector base and a growing eastern India manufacturing corridor. Those customers buy 50 to 300 kilowatts, not 10 MW — which is why a 3 MW building is commercially sensible even in a market this small.
It also means the building will never be a growth engine. The expansion, if it comes, will be in Kolkata 2 or in a new site, not here.

5Limits and open questions
- No stage. Neither Kolkata card says whether the building is operating.
- No racks, floor area or PUE.
- Counted at zero in a state that counts 1.08 MW in total.
- Site relationship unknown. The two Kolkata buildings may or may not share a site; the operator does not say.
- Single source for the 3 MW.
- What would close it. A stage and a rack count. Two lines for a building that defines the eastern market’s floor.
