Sify Kolkata 01 is a 1.08 MW carrier-neutral facility. An earlier, pre-reconciliation snapshot treated it as West Bengal’s only additive data-centre record and compared 1.08 MW with roughly 95 MW of published state capacity. That comparison is historical and has been superseded by the current stage-separated Registry reconciliation. This page retains the facility-level source trail and its earlier audit discussion.

Counted for the state1.08 MW——

The arithmetic is not subtle. About 95 MW of de-duplicated capacity is published for West Bengal — 60 plus 25 plus 9 plus 1.08 — and 1.08 MW is counted. The gap is not a claim that those facilities do not exist. CtrlS, NTT and STT GDC all operate in Kolkata and all publish their capacity.

The gap exists because of how the additive flag was applied. A campus aggregate and its individual buildings were both marked non-additive, on the reasonable-sounding principle that a building must not be counted twice inside its campus. The effect was to count it zero times.

A major pre-reconciliation defect was not confined to West Bengal

The pre-reconciliation audit snapshot flagged 62 facility and campus records, carrying roughly 5,100 MW, as non-additive with no additive child. That count describes the earlier audit state only; it is superseded by the current reconciliation linked above.

In that earlier snapshot, Sify’s Rabale campus was among the records affected by the non-additive flag pattern. Current stage totals and the rules used to reconcile parent/child capacity are documented in the current Registry reconciliation.

Gridvik published the stage-separated national reconciliation on 26 October 2026. It reports 778.69 MW operating, 499.00 MW under construction and 2,236.00 MW announced/approved/unverified across 242 source records, with 130 records counted for capacity. The 3,513.69 MW figure spans those stages and is not operating capacity. The former audit observations on this page are historical; use the reconciliation for current totals and method.

3Why the flag is not the same as the fact

An additive flag answers one question: if I add this number to the total, will I double-count something? It is a bookkeeping control, not a statement about whether a building exists. Two failure modes follow, and this registry has both.

The two ways the flag can go wrong
FailureWhat it looks likeEffect on the total
Counted twiceA campus and its buildings both flagged additiveInflation: the same steel counted two or three times
Counted neverA campus and its buildings all flagged non-additiveDeflation: real, operating capacity disappears
CorrectCampus non-additive, one child additiveThe building is counted once, at the right scope

West Bengal is the pure case of the second failure. CtrlS Kolkata: the 60 MW campus is non-additive, and its 16 MW building is also non-additive. There is no third record. The 60 and the 16 both vanish, and a state with a four-phase hyperscale campus counts nothing from it.

The same pattern repeats in Delhi, where four STT GDC records totalling 23.9 MW are all flagged non-additive and the state therefore counts zero. Delhi, a metro of thirty million people and the densest enterprise market in northern India, has 0 MW in the national figure.

That is not a market fact. It is a spreadsheet artefact that reads like a market fact, and it is exactly the kind of error a buyer would discover on their first diligence call and never trust the file again.

4Kolkata as the last unbuilt metro

Strip the flag problem out and West Bengal still tells you something real: the east is the least-built of India’s four large data centre markets.

Even on published rather than counted figures, Kolkata is a different order of market. CtrlS 60, NTT 25, STT 9, Sify 1.08 — about 95 MW, against Mumbai’s 786 MW and Chennai’s 297 MW. So the eastern market is somewhere between a tenth and an eighth the size of the western one, in a state with a larger population than Germany.

Two reasons, and neither is demand. Power and land are harder and dearer in the delta, and the subsea cable map empties out: the eastern seaboard has landing points but far fewer than Mumbai or Chennai. Sify’s own connectivity business depends on the eastern fibre routes, which is why it has operated here since the earliest years.

The commercial read is straightforward. Yotta has published a 250 MW West Bengal hyperscale park, and Sify has listed a Kolkata 02 edge site. If either is built, the state’s counted capacity changes by more than a hundredfold on the current figure — which is either the best opportunity in the file or the clearest sign that the plan is a land bank.

6Limits and open questions

  • Two published figures — 1.08 MW on the card and 1.1 MW in the 2025 report. The registry counts 1.08 MW.
  • The ~95 MW published figure is de-duplicated by hand from campus and building records. It is a reading of the file, not an operator disclosure.
  • Yotta’s 250 MW and Nxtra’s Kolkata facility carry no additive status and are excluded from both the published and counted figures above.
  • No PUE, rack count or floor area is published for Sify Kolkata 01.
  • Kolkata 02 has no stated capacity and is therefore not a record in its own right.
  • The 2,420.37 MW figure is the historical pre-reconciliation headline. The current stage-separated totals and method are published in the Registry reconciliation.
  • What would close it. Additive status assigned to one child per campus, and a capacity figure for Kolkata 02.
